Beijing Overview
Beijing, the capital city of the People's Republic of China, is also China's culture, economy and transport center. As a famous historical and cultural city, Beijing, together with Xi'an, Luoyang, Kaifeng, Nanjing and Hangzhou are honored as " Six Ancient China Cities"
Geography of Beijing
Located between 116" east longitude and 39" north latitude, with Tianjin City on its eastern border and Hebei Province on the other three sides, Beijing occupies a total area of 16,807.8 square kilometers. Beijing has 16 subordinate districts (Dongcheng District, Xicheng District, Chongwen District, Xuanwu District, Chaoyang District, Haidian District,Fengtai District, Shijingshan District, Mentougou District, Fangshan District, Tongzhou District, Shunyi District, Daxing District, Pinggu District, Changping District, Huairou District)and 2 counties( Miyun county and Yanqing county) with a population of 14.23 million. Beijing has a continental monsoon climate with four distinct seasons. Spring and autumn are shorter than winter and summer. December was the coldest month while July was the hottest. Average annual temperature of Beijing is 10-12℃
Beijing history
Beijing is one of the world's famous historical and cultural capitals. Peking man lived in Zhoukoudian, the suburb of Beijing as early as some half a million years ago. During the Warring States Period (475¨C221BC), the Marquis of Yan made the city of Ji his new capital.
Early in the third century BC, the first Emperor Qin Shi Huang set about conquering six states and unifying China. The city of Ji was named administrative center of Guangyang Commandery. For 10 centuries. Ji has been remained a strategic trading and military center. In 1153, Wan Yanliang, the emperor of Jin Dynasty moved the Jin capital to Yanjing and renamed it Zhongdu (Central Capital).
Mongol armies occupied Zhongdu in 1215. In year 1271 Kublai Khan formally made Yanjing the capital.
On August 2, 1368, Ming troops seized Dadu and renamed it Beiping; in 1421, Emperor Yongle formally transferred the capital from Nanjing to Beiping and, for the first time, named the city Beijing (Northern Capital). The capital name was adhered by the Qing Dynasty. Beijing was renamed to Beiping in 1928. On October 1st 1949, The People's Republic of China formally announced Beijing as the capital city.
Beijing Travel Resource
Beijing is abundant in all kinds of travel resources. It has more than 200 travel spots that are open to the public like: the world’s largest plaza forbidden city; The Temple of Heaven, the place where the Emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties would worship Heaven and pray for bumper crops; the earliest royal garden Beihai Park; the summer palace landscape. Its historic travel spots also include Badaling Great Wall, Mutianyu Great Wall, Simatai Great Wall as well as the best-kept courtyard Gong Wang Fu or Prince Gong Plaza. In total, Beijing has 7309 historical and relic sites among which 60 are ratified as national cultural heritages.

Beijing’s traditional artificial craft like Ivory carving, jade carving, Cloisonné, rugs also enjoy high reputation among the world.

Beijing Opera
Beijing opera is considered as a national treasure in China. It is originally a form of local theatre. In the reign of Emperor Qianlong, the four big Huiban opera Troupes entered the capital from South China’s Anhui Province. Gradually they combined with the Hanju Opera ,Kunqu Opera, Luantan Opera and Yiyang Opera. Through a period of more than half a century these various kinds of opera combined, integrated and evolved into the present Beijing opera.
Beijing China and the world
Beijing, as well as the whole China has integrated with the world ever since the carrying out of the reform and open up policy. The exchanges of economy, trade, science & technology, education and culture between Beijing and the world are increasing day by day. After the successful hosting of large scale international conferences like 11th Asian Game, the 4th World Conference on Women, the 21st Universiade, Beijing will host the XXIX Olympiad in year 2008 to show her commitment to the “one world, one dream”
Up to today, there are 137 foreign embassies, 17 international organizations and local agencies and 190 foreign news agencies in Beijing. The number of foreigners living in Beijing also reached 300,000. As one of the world’s largest travel destinations, Beijing attracts nearly 4 million foreign travelers annually.
